There are basically three types of Africa masks: those worn over the face, like the flat geometric shapes of the Bakota in Gabon; those worn on top of the head, such as the Tji Wara antelope figures created by the Bambara of Mali; and those that fit over the entire head, such as the black helmet masks worn by Mende women during initiation ceremonies in Sierra Leone. Some masks are enormous; the Dogon in Mali, for example, have masks that are 6 feet in height. In all their different variations, masks are made for many purposes: to oversee burial rites, punish offenders, honor royalty, ensure good weather and crop, or commemorate marriages and births. They are imbued with the supernatural powers of ancestors and of nature spirits, which are called upon during ceremonies. For example, Baga dancers in coastal Guinea carried massive Nimba masks on their shoulders to capture the attention of the goddess of fertility.
